+Most prepper types would be screwed
+in the event of an apocalypse lasting longer than a few months,
+since growing and preparing food usually takes a backseat
+to hoarding guns and ammunition.
+
+Despite having precious little else in common with such types
+I think my own interests put me ahead in their own game.
+
+I detest buying food that I know I can make,
+and buying food I _can't_ make (e.g. Oreos)
+if I can make a suitable alternative.
+
+It is _always_ cheaper to eat this way,
+often _significantly_ cheaper.
+
+Some food-based hobbies I intend to get into
+now that I have room for the equipment:
+
+* ice cream making
+* breadmaking
+* canning
+* pickling
+* winemaking
+
+I don't know if I have the patience for growing food,
+but my strict preference for scratch meals
+means that (conservatively) 75% of my household waste is compostable,
+and I'd be silly not to take advantage.
