Most prepper types would be screwed in the event of an apocalypse lasting longer than a few months, since growing and preparing food usually takes a backseat to hoarding guns and ammunition.

Despite having precious little else in common with such types I think my own interests put me ahead in their own game.

I detest buying food that I know I can make, and buying food I can't make (e.g. Oreos) if I can make a suitable alternative.

It is always cheaper to eat this way, often significantly cheaper.

Some food-based hobbies I intend to get into now that I have room for the equipment:

  • ice cream making
  • breadmaking
  • canning
  • pickling
  • winemaking

I don't know if I have the patience for growing food, but my strict preference for scratch meals means that (conservatively) 75% of my household waste is compostable, and I'd be silly not to take advantage.
